Reflective Encounters

Goodbye Python is an accomplished genre film told through the eyes of both its trans protagonist and its trans director. A film about learning to love and then to let go, this is a compelling watch with some strong visual qualities.

Offering a unique representation of sci-fi, the film explores its key themes of love, grief, and acceptance through a queer lens. The story remains interesting and engaging throughout, as the key themes are explored. It is thrilling to watch a sci-fi film that uses the genre to explore ideas of human emotion rather than the typical explorations of social and scientific anxieties found in many films of this type.

Goodbye Python is well-shot with smart and striking set design, littered with pastel hues and flashes of neon. The sound design works nicely, with an ambient score that transports you to a world, or a future, beyond our own. With the whirring and bleeping of machinery in the background, the attention to detail in the audio-visual setting is one of the strongest qualities of the film. Goodbye Python is a strong and poignant portrayal of affection and loss told through a highly stylistic genre technique.
