“A whirlpool of shape-shifting droplets dominates a black screen, self-reproducing ad infinitum; their fluidity grasping at symmetrical ends of the frame. The joyous experience of watching Catgot is tied not only to visual pleasure, but also to the sonic delight accompanying it. Tuned to a song by English electronic duo ISAN, this onerous short by Ho Tsz Wing renders hand-drawn animation into a flamboyantly choreographed cascade – of hues, of moods, of movements.

Coupled by the score’s lushious synths, drops may as well turn into tears gliding into evergrowing constellations to fold in again in a revivifying dance. One can possibly notice the influence of Japanese animator Masanobu Hiraoka in the combination of shapes and forms, or in the way their defined contours slip into one another and trade pigments. Catgot offers a magnetic watch, with both its enigmas and the levity with which the transformations are carried out. As a result, the fountain show makes the impression of a self-sufficient continual movement, only partially reliant on the resounding beats to aid its unfolding.
