2022 Competition Programmes

From over 4,000 films submitted, Encounters Film Festival are proud to announce that our 2022 Competition programmes are now live!

We’re thrilled that this year, the festival will be returning to Bristol in September, in-person for the first time since 2019. Featuring titles drawn from 41 countries around the world, the Competition programmes deliver extraordinary and original storytelling across a multitude of genres.

With over 90 films competing for the coveted Grand Prix titles in 17 eclectic programmes, expect works which explore sincere human connections, sinister body horror, complex digital entanglements and much, much more.

This year’s International Competition programmes were carefully curated by Ren Scateni, Encounters’ Head of Programme, along with our team of Preselectors : Florian Fernandez, Jonathan Bygraves, Alice Shone, Alonso Aguilar, Jason Tan Liwag, Apostolia Katsiantridou, Iris Došen, Ben Flanagan and Michel Rensen. The UK Student Competition was programmed by Fedor Tot and Steph Read.

Stay tuned for our soon-to-be-announced industry programme, VR, feature films and packed schedule of evening events. In the meantime, you can explore the competition programmes and selected films below, and grab your festival or discovery pass.

Retrospective Programme

Over the past two years, we’ve missed the opportunity to showcase films on cinema screens. We are delighted to welcome back 114 filmmakers from our 2020 and 2021 festivals whose works will screen as part of a special retrospective programme, offering audiences a chance to catch a selection of films from our past two festival editions in person for the first time. Explore the out-of-competition programme below.
